WC FINALS: Erik Guay ties for third in Garmisch downhill

Osborne-Paradis finishes fourth overall in DH, Cuche takes Crystal Globe

GARMISCH PARTENKIRCHEN, GER (March 10, 2010) - Erik Guay (Mont-Tremblant, QC) tied for third place at today's FIS World Cup Finals downhill, his second World Cup podium result in four days.

Guay, who captured his first super-G win last Sunday in Kvitfjell, NOR, finished the season's final World Cup DH in a time of one minute 58.52 seconds to stop the clock at exactly the same time as Swiss skier Patrick Kueng.

He travelled from Norway to Germany on Sunday and had just one training run prior to today's race.

"It was a pretty hectic schedule with not a lot of time to rest and recover. But it might have worked in my favour as well because I was fresh off that victory and feeling pretty good," said Guay, about the quick turnaround following Sunday's super-G win. "Being able to come here and put another (podium) in the bag feels really good. It's been a long time since I have been on the podium in the downhill so I couldn't be happier."

This is Guay's 12th career World Cup podium result including eight in the downhill discipline. TO put that into perspective, he's only two career podiums behind Canadian ski racing legend Ken Read, who sits second all-time among Canadian men.

"I feel like I am leaving less on the hill. I am satisfied with my skiing and that's kind of my ultimate goal," said Guay, who was seven hundreths from the days best time.

"Only seven hundreths behind is the blink of an eye. At the same time it could have gone the other way. If I look behind me, if I am 11 hundredths slower I think I am in ninth place," Guay said

"I am for sure very happy to be on the podium. It feels good to be on the podium, not fourth and fifth," he added.

Carlo Janka of Switzerland finished with a winning time of 1:58.45, just 0.02s better than Austria's Mario Scheiber in one of the closest races of the season. The win propels Janka into the overall World Cup lead with just three races remaining.

It's Didier Cuche of Switzerland leaving with the men's downhill Crystal Globe. Cuche, who won three times this season including the season-opening Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart, finishes with 528 points.

Manuel Osborne-Paradis (North Vancouver, BC) finished seventh in today's race. He ends an impressive 2009-2010 season in fourth in the downhill standings with 281 points. Guay's 156 points places him 13th.

REISCH WINS HOME RACE WHILE VONN TAKES DH TITLE
Germany's Maria Riesch, who is from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, won today's ladies downhill in 1:34.82. The win keeps Reisch hopes for an overall title alive mathematically although American Lindsey Vonn appears on the verge of the overall crown.

Vonn, who was second in today's race, did officially secure the ladies downhill title. Finishing with 725 World Cup points.

Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC), who did not complete today's downhill, ends up sixth in the DH standings with 219 points. Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) was 19th in today's race and finishes 18th overall in the DH.

Today's races were carried live on www.cbcsports.ca and CBC cable channel bold as will be the ladies super-G on Friday.

The GMC Alpine Ski Series can be seen on the main CBC network on Saturday with coverage of the ladies super-G beginning at 2 p.m. ET followed by the men's slalom at 3:30 p.m. ET. The men's slalom is then replayed early Sunday morning at 12:30 a.m. local time.

Both men's super-G races are available to French-language viewers on www.radio-canada.ca as well as the men's slalom. Radio-Canada is scheduled to have two hours of coverage on its main network Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. ET.

Tomorrow's ladies GS will be on Rogers Sportsnet at 7 p.m. in the Eastern, Ontario and Pacific viewing regions as well as 3:30 p.m. in the West. Rogers Sportsnet will also have coverage of Friday's men's GS and Saturday's women's slalom.

The World Cup Finals continue tomorrow with a men's super-G and ladies giant slalom.
