Canadian skiers have enjoyed history of recent success in Colorado
ANTALYA, TUR (June 3, 2010) -Vail /Beaver Creek, USA has successfully bid for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the International Ski Federation (FIS) announced today.
The announcement was made during the FIS Congress in Antalya, TUR, with the successful bid receiving an absolute majority in the first ballot with eight votes, compared to four votes for Cortina d'Ampezzo, ITA and St. Moritz SUI with three votes.
The region played host to the FIS Alpine World Ski Champi
onships in 1989 and 1999 and has hosted World Cup races since 1967.
Canadians have an established history of recent World Cup success in Colorado, with Erik Guay (Mont-Tremblant, QC) on the podium in 2005 and 2008 in Beaver Creek. Michael Janyk (Whistler, BC) achieved the first World Cup podium of his career, finishing second in the slalom in Beaver Creek back in 2006.
It's also worth noting that Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) got the first World Cup win of her career in 2007, not too far away in Aspen.
The 2011 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, GER later this season while the 2013 event will be in Schladming, AUT.
