Emily Brydon 11th in Crans Montana downhill

American Vonn holds off some unlikely challenges to win

CRANS MONTANA, SUI (March 6, 2010) - Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) finished in 11th spot in today's World Cup downhill in a snowy and windy Crans Montana, SUI.

American Lindsey Vonn won the race as changing conditions and a charging field made for a very interesting finish. Italy's Johanna Schnarf, with bib 32, took advantage of a late bib number to nearly win, finishing in one minute 35.27 seconds, just 0.01s behind Vonn's time. Three racers later, Marianne Abderhalden of Switzerland gave her best effort to overtake the top time, ending up with a third place finish.

The win secures the ladies overall World Cup downhill title for Vonn. She has 645 World Cup points in downhill this season, which is more than 100 ahead of Germany's Maria Riesch, with just one downhill race remaining.

The CBC has more than 14 hours of ski racing coverage this weekend and another nine hours next week on its various platforms.

The GMC Alpine Ski Series on CBC begins at 2 p.m. ET today with the ladies downhill followed by the men's DH from Kvitfjell, NOR at 4:30 p.m. ET.

French-language viewers can also catch both races on Radio-Canada beginning at 3 p.m. ET.

For Brydon it was unlucky day to have bib 19 as heavy wind and snowfall weakened for some of the later racers.

"The conditions changed a fair bit after about racer 27 or so. But I mean the course stayed in good condition throughout," said Brydon. "When I look at the results, I was about fifth or so among my peers so it was a fairly good result."

Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) had to settle for 35th position while Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB) placed 44th.

They will be looking to improve those results in tomorrow's super-G, the final ladies event before next week's World Cup Finals.
